Seminar and Open House

2016 PRB Coal Users’ Group “Plant of the Year”

Wednesday, October 19, 2016 - 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM

From NOx Reduction to Reduced Coal Stock Pile Management

Gain insights from the 2016 “Plant of the Year” recipient – Ameren’s Rush Island Generating Station - by joining us for a complimentary seminar “From NOx Reduction to Reduced Coal Stock Pile Management” and a plant tour for members of the PRB Coal Users’ Group.

Hear from the “doers” of their journey in NOx reduction.  Just as with N (Nitrogen) and O₂ (Oxygen), during combustion, contribute to the production of NOx, so does T (Technology) and E(employees) contribute to its reduction.  During this seminar hear from two engineers how Rush Island Generating Station capitalized on technology and employees to reduce NOx.

Installation and Development of Neural Network Technology

1.     Dedicated staff performing combustion optimization including KPI's to incentivize NOx performance.

2.     Good/Aggressive design of low NOx system (for T-fired aggressive SOFA capacity and adjustable yaw).

3.     Attention to detail for operator acceptance and use of the best Neural Network technology on the market today.

Tom Ziegler – Performance Engineering, Ameren

Sootblowing Optimization Using Griffin

This talk will detail the decision to replace the sequence-based sootblowing scheme that had been used for many years at the plant with a more robust, easy-to-use system. The Griffin system, the same software used to optimize NOx, used to develop a more user-friendly sootblowing optimizer with more control features. An overview of the system and some of the customization available will be provided.

1.       The Griffin system is a powerful tool that is easy to program and modify.

2.       Replacing the sequence-based sootblowing scheme with an optimizer provides much more flexibility in regard to sootblowing operation and can be quickly modified to accommodate changing conditions.

3.       A key factor to the success of the system is to have someone monitoring and updating the system to account for changing operations/conditions on the units.

Jeff Shelton – Performance Engineering, Ameren

A topic during networking with peers during this year’s Annual Meeting often the topic of managing and maintaining coal storage (pile) when faced with reduced inventory whether a result of decreased demand for power or the absence of coal purchases or deliveries.  Join us to hear a distinguished Director of the Board of Directors of the PRB Coal Users’ Group share his forty plus years of experience on this topic.

Coal Pile Maintenance Management with Reduced Inventory

This session will be an interactive session intended to discuss your experiences, your practices, and your challenges…plus hear about:

1.       Reduced stock pile inventory preservation

2.       Stock pile operations safety.

3.       “Surviving” just in time delivery.
